Common factors of a newborn with tongue tie

  • Slow weight gain
  • Mom with sore nipples

It can be difficult to tell if newborn feeding concerns are directly related to tongue tie.

Tongue ties that need to be addressed often:

  • Have a distinct appearance to them
  • Cause trouble forming a seal around the breast
  • Can cause sore nipples for mom

Frenulums need to be evaluated for:

  • Position on the tongue
  • Thickness
  • Mothers pain, baby’s weight gain
    • It is typical to have weight loss in the first 2 weeks of life
    • Up to 80% of mom’s who breastfeed have some nipple breakdown not associated with frenulum issues

Not all frenulums need to be clipped! If you have concerns about tongue tie, please bring them up at your visit so we can help you and your baby sort the issue out.
